The annual conference of SIOP, the largest pediatric oncology meeting in the world, is organized by the Cancer Hospital of the year by Dana-Farber/Children ‘s, a partnership between Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children Hospital Boston. It takes place Thursday, October 21 to Sunday, October 24th at the B. John Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center in Boston.Data from the trial of 25 young women between the ages of 9-16 are presented to the 42 Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology in Boston Friday, October 22. The study was led by Lindsay Frazier, MD, pediatric oncologist at DF / CHCC and president of germ cell tumors of children’s oncology group.
The recurrence rate was 50 % – higher than children with germ cell tumors – but the treatment was delayed more effective if a girl has died, a survival rate of 96 %.
Germ cell tumors that develop are precursors of sperm in males and females eggs. Some forms of cancer are usually detected immediately after birth, the other types are more frequent between 10 and 30 years.
This study was undertaken to test this approach a watch and wait for the women. Frazier said the stage tumors 25 girls with ovarian germ cell cancer were recruited from approximately 100 medical centers – an indication of the scarcity of cancer. In all cases, the tumors were completely removed surgically.
Previous tests had shown that chemotherapy was safe and effective in delaying tumor stage testicular germ cells in boys. Over time, 30 % of patients developed a recurrence, but they were all treated with chemotherapy.
‘For many years, the AMA has called for a coordinated national effort to eradicate rheumatic heart disease among Aborigines,’ Dr Hambleton said.
‘I personally think that giving chemotherapy to half of the patients [women with germ cell tumors of the ovary] is a good thing,’ said Frazier. ‘The chemotherapy is given as effective when the disease reappears. I recommend that parents consider a vision and strategy of waiting.’
‘The median time to relapse was two months and the last relapse was 9 months, so that families do not live with uncertainty for a long time,’ said Frazier.
Rather than undergo chemotherapy immediately, the girls were closely monitored for signs of relapse.

Every three weeks their blood was tested for biochemical markers signifying a regrowth of the tumor, and every three months, were acquired with CT or MRI.
